Having worked professionally both with traditional 35mm film equipment and as an early adopter of new Digital Cinema technology (DCP) back in 2007, Simon is well placed to help design a bespoke training scheme for your venue. Using experience gained from training over many years in the Financial Services sector Simon understands the different learning styles  that we all have and can easily adopt his style to suit, engendering confidence in the trainee.

From early 2000 Simon has worked with many venues including Number 8 Pershore, Malvern Cinema, Ludlow Assembly Rooms, Gloucester Guildhall, Theatr Brycheiniog Brecon, and many Community Cinemas as part of the BFI Technical Ambassador scheme.

Simon is currently Head of Film for the Courtyard Centre for the Arts Hereford where he oversees all the cinema’s technical aspects as well as curating and booking the venue’s eclectic film programme. Being the main venue for the Borderlines Film Festival since its launch in 2003 Simon has been behind the scenes and acted as Technical Manager overseeing the projection of 60 plus films in over 100 screenings ensuring the smooth running of the festival, a major undertaking!

Simon is also Film Programmer for Gloucester Guildhall where he curates and books the Cinema’s film programme.

Over the years Simon has built a strong network of valuable contacts whose added technical skills and enthusiasm can be used to help support venues large and small.

Bespoke Training Levels

Set out below are details of the various levels of training to help and support both professional staff and competent volunteers alike build their confidence in Digital Cinema Projection.

Digital Projection

Basic

At the end of the training the participant will be able to:

  • Recognise the difference between content in a playlist

  • Understand the importance of correctly presenting film ratios

  • Start  a screening

  • Basic showmanship

  • Basic Problem solving

Intermediate

At the end of the training the participant will be able to:

  • Understand and identify playlist components known as cpl

  • Transfer content from a storage device

  • Identify accessibility content for Hard of Hearing audiences and those requiring Audio Description

  • Complete a basic playlist

Advanced

At the end of the training the participant will be able to:

  • Complete an advanced playlist including advertising, trailers and adding appropriate playlist cues

  • Convert video files to DCP

Satellite Broadcasting

At the end of the training the participant will be able to:

  • Confidently set up and play additional content (Blu-Ray/DVD/satellite) and adhering to correct picture ratios

  • Tune a satellite receiver from co-ordinates published by broadcast provider

    Correctly understand the use of and difference between close-captioned and open-captioned subtitles.

  • Conduct basic fault-finding during satellite broadcasts
